Turning Plastic Bags into Art

Plastic bags have long been an environmental nuisance.  I would direct you to this inciteful article on the problem of plastic bags on the website, Californians Against Waste: http://www.cawrecycles.org/issues/plastic_campaign/plastic_bags/problem

Eco-conscious consumers have learned to bring their own reusable bags when shopping, but what's to be done with the zillions of plastic bags that are already out there?  Artists and crafters working with salvaged materials have come up with some ingenious ideas.  For starters, plastic bags can be cut into strips called "plarn", or plastic yarn, which can then be knitted or crocheted into practical things like totes and handbags.  Make your own plarn or look on Etsy for shops that have already done the hard part for you.

Plastic bags can also be stacked and fused together with a hot iron to create a flexible waterproof material that lends itself to making things like wallets and cosmetic cases.  Here is a link to a good tutorial for fusing plastic bags: http://etsylabs.blogspot.com/2007/05/long-overdue-fusing-plastic-bag.html

Below you will find some inspirational examples from the artists on Etsy.

  1. My apologies to Out Of The Frame. I originally put one of her non-upcycled bunnies in this collection. She pointed out my blunder and I have corrected it! Thank you, Out Of The Frame!
